Getting ready
Before you open the box: ensure you purchased from an official source, use a clean computer, and never share your recovery seed with anyone.
Step 1 — Unboxing & verification
What you’ll find
- Trezor device (Model One or Model Model T)
- USB cable
- Recovery card and quick start leaflet
- Tamper-evident seal (verify it)
Action
Confirm packaging seals and physical integrity. If anything looks tampered with, contact support immediately.
Step 2 — Connect to Trezor Suite
Install the official app
Open Trezor Suite on your computer or use the web client at the official start page. Trezor Suite will guide you through firmware and setup.
Step 3 — Initialize your device
- Choose Create new on the device to generate a fresh seed.
- Write down the recovery seed exactly as shown (use the recovery card provided).
- Confirm the seed words when prompted by the device.
Pro tip
Never store your recovery seed digitally (photos, cloud, text files). Consider a metal backup for long-term safety.
Step 4 — Set a device PIN
Choose a PIN that’s easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. Each wrong PIN attempt increases the delay before the next try.
Step 5 — Update firmware
Only accept firmware updates that are offered through Trezor Suite or the official start site. Firmware updates fix security issues and improve compatibility.
Security best practices
Physical security
- Keep your device in a safe place when not in use.
- Use tamper-proof shipping and official packaging when buying/reselling.
Operational security
- Use the official Trezor Suite or recognized wallet integrations.
- Enable passphrases only if you understand them — they add complexity but extra security.
Troubleshooting
- If the device isn’t recognized, try a different USB cable/port and ensure Suite is up to date.
- Lost seed — funds are unrecoverable without the written recovery phrase. If possible, use any previously created backups or metal seed storage.
- Suspicious behavior — disconnect and contact official support immediately.
Wrap up
Once initialized and secured, your Trezor wallet gives you strong, offline control of your private keys. Use verified apps, keep backups in multiple secure locations, and review security guidance regularly.
